Ten minutes of careful inspection before payment saves months of veterinary bills. Here is exactly what experienced buyers look at.
Anyone can sell you an animal that looks acceptable from across a pen. The difference between a good purchase and an expensive mistake usually shows up in ten minutes of deliberate inspection — and it is entirely learnable.
Start with how it moves
Watch the animal walk before you touch it. A healthy animal moves freely, holds its head up and shows alert interest in what is happening around it. Lameness, a dropped head, reluctance to rise, or standing apart from the group are all worth investigating before anything else.
Then work through the checklist
- Eyes — clear and bright. Discharge, cloudiness or sunken eyes are warning signs; sunken eyes usually mean dehydration.
- Nose — cool and slightly moist. Thick or coloured discharge indicates respiratory infection.
- Coat — smooth and lying flat. A staring, rough coat suggests worms or poor nutrition.
- Breathing — quiet and regular. Coughing or laboured breathing at rest is a serious flag.
- Dung — firm and well formed for the species. Scouring means a problem you will inherit.
- Body condition — you should feel ribs under light pressure, not see them from a distance.
- Mouth and gums — pink and moist. Pale gums indicate anaemia, often from heavy parasite load.
- Feet — no heat, swelling or smell. Foot problems are painful, slow to fix and expensive.
Ask for the paperwork
A vaccination and deworming record is the single most useful document in the transaction. A seller who cannot produce one is asking you to take their word for the animal's history. Sometimes that word is good. Often it is not, and you will not find out until later.
Judge the premises, not just the animal
Look past the animal at the environment it came from. Clean pens, dry bedding, accessible water and a calm, well-handled herd tell you more about what you are buying than any single inspection. Animals reflect their management.
Buy from people who expect to see you again
The strongest protection available to a buyer is a seller with a reputation to protect. A farm that wants your repeat business, and your recommendation to others, has every incentive to be straight with you about an animal's history — including the parts that are inconvenient.
